What Is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a federally compliant driver's license or state ID that meets standards set by the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID (or a U.S. passport) is required to:

  • Board domestic flights within the United States
  • Access federal government buildings
  • Visit military bases

A standard Rhode Island driver's license without the REAL ID star mark is no longer accepted for these purposes.

Does Your Current RI License Have REAL ID?

Look at the upper portion of your RI driver's license or ID. If it has a gold star in the upper right corner, it is already REAL ID compliant. If there's no star, you need to upgrade.

REAL ID is available when you get or renew your RI driver's license or state ID. There is no additional fee — REAL ID is included at the standard license price.

Step 1: Schedule a DMV Appointment

REAL ID applications require an in-person visit. Schedule at dmv.ri.gov or call 401-588-3020.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

You must bring original documents — photocopies are not accepted.

Tip: All documents must show your current legal name. If your name changed due to marriage or divorce, bring the applicable legal documents in addition to the above.

Step 3: Visit the DMV and Request REAL ID

At the DMV, tell the clerk you want a REAL ID. They will scan and verify your documents. Your documents are not kept — they're returned to you after scanning.

Step 4: Receive Your Temporary Document

After approval, you'll receive a temporary paper license valid for 60 days while your permanent REAL ID card is mailed to you.

REAL ID Fees

REAL ID is included in your standard license or ID fee — there is no extra charge.

What If I Don't Want a REAL ID?

You can keep a standard (non-REAL ID) RI license. However, you will need a U.S. passport or passport card to board domestic flights or access federal facilities. A standard RI license is still valid for all state purposes (driving, state government services, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a REAL ID without a U.S. passport?

Yes — a certified birth certificate (with raised seal) plus your Social Security card and two proofs of RI residency is sufficient. You don't need a passport.

Can I apply for REAL ID online?

No. REAL ID applications must be done in person so the DMV can verify your original documents.

What if my name on my documents doesn't match?

Bring legal name-change documents (marriage certificate, court order). All documents must trace a clear chain to your current legal name.

My license already has the star — do I need to do anything?

No. If your RI license already has the gold star, you're set. Just keep it renewed.

I'm not a U.S. citizen — can I get a REAL ID?

Yes, if you're a lawful permanent resident or have eligible immigration status. Bring your immigration documents (permanent resident card, EAD, etc.) as your identity document.
