Rhode Island Vehicle Registration — What You Need to Know

All vehicles operated on Rhode Island roads must be registered with the RI Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Registration must be renewed annually.

New Vehicle Registration — Step by Step

Step 1: Get RI Auto Insurance First

Rhode Island requires minimum liability insurance before you can register a vehicle:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person
  • $50,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $25,000 property damage per accident

Your insurer will give you an insurance card — bring it to the DMV.

Buying a Car Privately in Rhode Island

If you buy a car from a private seller, you must:

1

Get the signed title from the seller

2

Have the car's VIN inspected at a DMV office ($40 fee)

3

Pay sales tax (7%) on the purchase price or NADA book value — whichever is higher

4

Register the vehicle within 30 days of purchase

Renewing Your Registration Online

Rhode Island allows online registration renewals at dmv.ri.gov if:

  • Your registration has not yet expired (or expired less than 60 days ago)
  • Your insurance is on file with the DMV
  • There are no outstanding fees or violations on your record

Renewals can also be done by mail using the renewal notice sent to your address.

Out-of-State Vehicles — Transferring Registration to Rhode Island

New RI residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, insurance card, and RI license to the DMV.

License Plates

Rhode Island issues standard blue-and-white "Ocean State" plates by default. Specialty plates (Newport Cliff Walk, RI Veterans, universities, etc.) are available for an additional annual fee of $5–$15 above the standard registration fee.
