Rhode Island Vehicle Inspection — What You Need to Know
Rhode Island law requires all registered passenger vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection. Unlike some states, Rhode Island does not have emissions (smog) testing — only a safety inspection.
When Is Your Vehicle Due for Inspection?
Your inspection is due by the last day of your registration month, once per year. Your registration renewal notice will show the month your inspection is due. The inspection sticker on your windshield also shows the expiration month and year.
Where to Get an Inspection in Rhode Island
Rhode Island vehicle inspections are performed by licensed private inspection stations, not by DMV offices. You can get inspected at:
- Most auto repair shops that display an official RI inspection station sign
- Many gas stations with service bays
- Dealership service departments
To find a licensed inspection station near you, use the RI DMV inspection station locator.
Inspection Fee
The state-set fee for a standard passenger vehicle safety inspection is $55. Individual inspection stations may charge this exact amount — they cannot charge more or less for the state inspection portion.
What the Inspector Checks
During a Rhode Island safety inspection, the inspector examines:
| System | What's Checked |
|---|---|
| Brakes | Brake pads, rotors, brake lines, parking brake |
| Lights | Headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights |
| Tires | Tread depth (minimum 2/32"), sidewall condition, proper inflation |
| Steering & suspension | Steering linkage, ball joints, tie rods |
| Exhaust | No leaks; proper routing away from passenger compartment |
| Windshield & wipers | No cracks blocking driver's view; working wipers |
| Horn | Must be functional |
| Mirrors | Driver's side mirror required; additional mirrors if vision is obstructed |
| Seatbelts | Must latch and retract properly |
| OBD-II port scan | For 1996+ vehicles — checks for active diagnostic trouble codes |
What Happens If Your Car Fails Inspection?
If your vehicle fails, the inspector will give you a rejection sticker explaining what needs to be repaired. You have 60 days from the rejection date to have repairs made and return for a reinspection.
Reinspection fees: If you return to the same station within 30 days for the same failed items, many stations waive or reduce the reinspection fee. Verify their policy before returning.
New Vehicles
Brand-new vehicles purchased from a dealer are exempt from the inspection requirement for the first year of registration. After that, annual inspections are required.
Classic and Antique Vehicles
Vehicles registered as "antique" (generally 25+ years old) have different inspection requirements. Contact the DMV or your inspection station for specifics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive my car if the inspection sticker is expired?
Technically no — driving with an expired inspection sticker is a violation in Rhode Island and can result in a fine. However, enforcement focus is typically on vehicles significantly past due.
Does Rhode Island test for emissions?
No. Rhode Island only requires a safety inspection — there is no separate emissions or smog test.
Do I need an inspection to renew my registration?
Yes. The DMV cross-references inspection records. If your vehicle hasn't passed a current inspection, your registration renewal may be flagged.
What if I just bought the car?
Newly purchased vehicles have a grace period. Contact the DMV at 401-588-3020 if you have questions about inspection timing for a recently purchased vehicle.
