For a day trip, always take the high-speed ferry. The extra 20 minutes each way adds up to 40 more minutes on the island.

Newport → Block Island — Seasonal

Seasonal passenger-only service runs from Newport's Fort Adams State Park during summer. Convenient if you're already spending time in Newport, but departures are less frequent than Point Judith.

Providence → Block Island — Seasonal

Limited seasonal service from Providence's India Point Park. Least frequent of the three routes — check blockislandferry.com for current schedule.

  • Last outbound sailing: approximately 5:00–6:00pm
  • Multiple crossings throughout the day on peak summer dates

How to Book Block Island Ferry Tickets

1

Go to blockislandferry.com

2

Select your departure point (Point Judith for most visitors)

3

Choose your date and preferred sailing time

4

Select passenger count and any add-ons (bikes, pets)

5

Pay and receive confirmation — save it on your phone

Book as early as possible for summer weekends. July and August sailings, especially Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, sell out weeks in advance. Showing up without a ticket on a busy summer weekend is a gamble you will probably lose.

Off-peak travel: Spring and fall sailings rarely sell out. If you're flexible on dates, late September is an excellent time to visit — fewer crowds, lower prices, and the island has a quieter character that summer visitors never see.

Parking at Point Judith

Several paid parking lots are located near the Galilee ferry terminal.

  • Expect to pay: $20–30 per day in peak summer season
  • Arrive early: On summer weekends, lots fill up by mid-morning
  • Recommendation: Arrive at least 45 minutes before your sailing, especially on weekends

There is no free parking within reasonable walking distance of the ferry terminal in summer.

FAQ

Do I need to book Block Island ferry tickets in advance?

Yes, for any summer weekend — especially July and August. Weekday sailings and shoulder-season travel (May, June, September) have more flexibility, but booking ahead is always the safer move.

Can I take my car to Block Island on the ferry?

Yes, but it's expensive and usually unnecessary. The car ferry from Point Judith carries vehicles, but rates are $65–95+ each way depending on vehicle size. Block Island is small — a rented bike covers everything a day-tripper needs.

What if I miss my ferry?

You can usually get standby passage on the next available sailing, space permitting. In peak season this may mean a long wait. Don't cut it close.

Is the ferry ride rough?

It can be on windy days. The traditional ferry has more deck space and a smoother ride for those prone to seasickness. The high-speed ferry is faster but can feel choppier in swells. Sit toward the middle of the boat and face forward if you're concerned.

Are there restrooms on the ferry?

Yes, both the traditional ferry and high-speed ferry have onboard restrooms.

Can I bring food on the ferry?

Yes. Snacks and drinks are permitted. The traditional ferry has a small snack bar onboard.
